moreVoting Question: please help me with this finance problem?
Herman and Grace Rohrbach are in their mid thirties. They are reasonably well off financially insofar as Grace's mother has established a trust fund to educate their two children, Barbara and Frances. The Rohrbachs lead rather simple lives and have no desires for lavish spending. However, they do face one major financial challenge: how to have sufficient resources in their retirement years. Herman owns his own camera shop and Grace has no employment income, although she often works in Herman's store.
The Rohrbachs have accumulated around $50,000 in savings, which is invested in a bond mutual fund, currently earning 5 percent after taxes. They have no other savings programs, either personal or through business. If Herman retired today, his only income would be Social Security, which he estimates to be $18,000 annually. He would sell the business immediately prior to retirement. He has no idea what it will be worth then, but he believes he could get $100,000 for it today. To live a comfortable retirement, the Rohrbachs think they need an income comparable to their current one, which is $60,000 after income taxes. The Rohrbachs clearly need help to determine if they need to increase their annual savings to meet their retirement goal. Finally, the Rohrbachs will live off Social Security and interest from accumulated savings available at retirement. They will not touch any principal in their savings accounts, preferring instead to leave that money to their children. Retirement is planned in 30 years.
1. Social Security is indexed to inflation. If the inflation rate is 3 percent over the next 30 years, how much Social Security income will the Rohrbachs receive? How much will their income (currently $60,000) be at that time, assuming it grows at the 3 percent rate? How much, then, will be the shortfall - the difference between the two?
2. How much will be in the bond at retirement, assuming that it continues to earn 5 percent?
3. Herman has a very good location for his camera shop and can renew the lease indefinitely into the future. Suppose that its value increases by 10 percent annually over the next 30 years. How much will it then be worth?
4. Combine your answers to Questions 2 and 3. The total represents an amount available to the Rohrbachs at the beginning of retirement. Now assume that they sell the camera shop and put the proceeds into the bond fund, and the fund continues to earn 5 percent during their retirement years. Are these annual earnings sufficiently high to meet the income shortfall determined in Question 1? Your answer should be "no." Determine how much they must invest each year to accumulate a sufficient amount, which can also be deposited into a bond fund. Assume they earn 12 percent on these annual (end of year) investments.

moreResolved Question: Is it wise for me to use leverage to purchase dividend paying stocks?
Is this the time, between now and say summer, for the average investor to
borrow money to purchase buy and hold stocks? A basket of normally expensive blue
chip type stocks that have high dividend yields and are thought to be value
priced in this current market?.
These stocks are expensive to buy for investors like me who invest using a
portion of our paycheque. We are forced to purchase index funds/mutual
funds until our wealth is high enough that we can justify paying brokerage
and trading fees for ETF's or individual stocks. Perhaps now is a time to
consider borrowing money to purchase long-term buy and hold dividend
yielding stocks because the dividend yields and potential share price
increase will erase the cost of the transaction fees.
Here are my thoughts:
-Yes dividends are not considered safe until they are PAID but once paid for
me they are taxed at 25% of my normal income tax rate (Cash interest is
taxed at the full rate for example)..
-Assuming (in Canada) the interest owing on borrowed money used to fund
equities purchases is tax deductable.
-Or else I can borrow money to contribute to a Retirement tax shelter (RRSP)
and instead of claiming interest as a tax deduction, I would get a automatic
reduction of income taxes owing. In my case it'll be 34% of the amount I
contribute to the retirement shelter.
-As a personal creed I never borrow money unless I have an equal amount
available to pay off that debt.
Now this may not be a course of action for myself but what about others? Is
leverage recommended for the little long term investor?
moreResolved Question: what is a good investment giving our current economy?
am in a a bit of a tough position and I need a good resource. My dad passed away a few years ago, and left my mom with a decent amount of money. Not a ton, and probably not enough to have retired on, but she has a good start. She has never worked outside the home, and is old enough that starting a real job is out of the question.
My dad was one of those guys who if he stayed on top of it, could have (and probably still could) make a killing in the market... if he wasn't lazy about it. He knew what to buy, and when to buy it, but he let things sit for too long without reacting as he should have. For example, even the firms he invested with were impressed with his investment choices, but he never refinanced his mortgage, which sat at 11%. Much of his savings was in individual stocks. Needless to say, they aren't anymore.
Now my mom is trying to figure out what she wants to do with the money she has. I know enough to get by and prepare for the future with where I am in life. The strategies that I would use don't make any sense for my mom, as my tolerance for risk is still higher than hers.
So what I am looking for is, do any of you have any good references on anything that will either help my mom manage her money, or help me to manage it for her? Right now, she is just looking for something that defines what her options are (CDs, Mutual funds, money market accounts, etc). Beyond that any good resources for retirement strategies? She is just young enough that social security isn't available, but old enough, and in enough poor health that a job isn't practical.

moreResolved Question: To sell or not to sell mutual fund B-shares with high expense ratio?
My employer's 401k plan is through Lord Abbett. The only funds available to us are B-shares with very high expense ratios -- many are over 2% -- back-end loads of 5.00%. I have been contributing for the past year, and there is a chance we may switch to Fidelity, whose mutual funds have fees closer to 0.7%.
Should I:
A) Liquidate the B-shares and sacrifice 5% of my portfolio to the back-end load in favor of the lower ongoing 0.7% fee, or
B) Keep the B-shares I have until they convert to A-shares in 2016?
Obviously nobody can predict what the market will do, but assuming the shares perform equally well over the next 8 years, am I better off taking a 5% hit now, or 2% annually for 7-8 years?
moreResolved Question: Buying Vanguard mutual fund through Vanguard or a Broker?
I was planning on purchasing shares in Vanguard's 2055 retirement mutual fund. However there is a $3000 minimum initial deposit to start a fund.
Does this minimum still apply if I bought shares in the fund through a low-cost broker such as Tradeking that let me purchase individual funds and stocks? Or would this fund not be available through them?
If it is, would it make sense to buy it through them and avoid the fees associated with Vanguard?Tradeking is $4.95 per trade. I don't believe there are any other fees with them.
moreResolved Question: What is your opinion of the attached editorial?
History repeats in housing disaster
We all await word from Washington, D.C., concerning our new president’s plan to fix the economy.
We’re told to expect bags of money to be distributed by the federal government soon. We’re expected to believe the generosity of Washington will save us from our current circumstances. Really? Let’s take a look at what brought us to the current situation.
Research begun immediately after the stock market crash of 1929 found that a major factor in the market crash of 1929 was a sudden downturn of real estate prices (a housing bubble burst). Does this remind us of recent events?
In 1932 Senator Glass and Representative Steagall co-sponsored a bill to preclude a recurrence of what happened in 1929. This bill, intended to keep commercial banks from selling loans to investment banks, was known as the Glass-Steagall Act. President Roosevelt signed the bill into law in 1933. The deepest significance of the new law was to require mortgage lenders to pay close attention to the viability of every loan they were considering. Since new loans could no longer be sold to investment banks each lender was strongly motivated to be sure a borrower was capable of repaying the loan.
In 1938 the Federal Government created FNMA (known as “Fannie Mae”), a Federal agency whose purpose was to make more money available to lower-income citizens for purchasing of homes.
In 1968 the Feds acted again. The structure of Fannie Mae was changed to public corporation. Known as a Government Sponsored Enterprise (GSE) this revised structure enabled citizens to invest in mortgage lending markets by buying stock in Fannie Mae. Later that same year Uncle Sam created “Freddie Mac” as a GSE. The Feds were working to make even more money available to lower-income folks for the purchase of homes.
In 1977 the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) was enacted to “encourage” lenders more aggressively to make money available to home buyers, primarily in the inner-city neighborhoods. There has been a long-established concern in Washington about home ownership and lower-income people. This is not necessarily a bad thing.
Early in the Clinton administration Attorney General Janet Reno announced that the Justice Department would start investigating lenders who were not meeting the “aims” of the CRA.
To avoid being charged with misconduct alleged by the attorney general, many mortgage lenders began granting loans to applicants who otherwise might not qualify for a standard loan. The so-called “sub-prime market” was born. Paying higher loan fees and higher interest rates on these loans, low-income borrowers were helped to access home ownership.
1999: In its infinite wisdom, Congress repealed Glass-Steagall. Now mortgage lenders could once again sell their loans to investment banks (Wall Street). With many questionable loans now on their books there was great motivation to do so. Upon purchasing loans from lenders, investment banks would package them as investments (known as Collateralized Mortgage Obligations or CMOs) and then promote them to mutual fund companies. This is how this all got into your 401k !
Early in the current decade there were numerous reports to Congress about the questionable dealings at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Regulators’ voices were heard in Congress urging immediate investigation. Each time the voices were silenced with strong retort from the likes of Senator Christopher Dodd and Congressman Barnie Frank. No investigation was ever conducted.
Where are we now? We are expected to believe that the Federal Government can “save our economy.” Do you believe that? You can’t be serious. The Federal Government created this mess.
Last week Mr. Obama stated he had only recently become aware of how bad our economy is. Are you kidding me? We are supposed to look to this guy for real leadership and real change? This is absurd !
Write your Congressman. Demand that a new Glass-Steagall Act be put in force immediately.Peyton - You own something alright but it isn't anyone else.

ANOTHER LETTER:
From Dr Amudu John .
The Personal Assistant Manager,
Bank Of Africa(B.O.A)
Ouagadougou, Burkina-Faso.
PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL
Dear Friend,
This message might meet you in utmost surprise,However,Its just my urgent need for a foreign partner that made me to contact you for this transaction, I am Dr Amudu John personal Assistant to the Branch Manager of Bank Of Africa(BOA)Ouagadougou Burkina Faso. I want to inquire from you if you can handle this transaction for mutual benefits/life opportunity for you and me. The transaction is about seeking your consent to present you as the next of kin/ beneficiary of the US$10.3 MILLION DOLLAR,(TEN
MILLION,THREE HOUNDRED THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS), and who is a customer to the bank where i work.
This money is owned by a man called MR HASSAN ABDULLAH,a Lebanese who was involved in the december 26th 2003 Benin plane crash in West Africa, with his family during their vacation journey . The Fund is currently in a suspense account awaiting claim, the bank made a public notice that they are ready to release this fund to any of his relatives abroad.
THEREFORE, by virtue of its nature as being utterly CONFIDENTIAL, top secret should be maintained please!,because i am still in the active service i do not need any form of implication especially now I'm in the verge of my retirement to endanger my career at last!.
Since we got the information about his death, we have been expecting his next of kin to come over and claim his money because we cannot release it unless some body applies for it as next of kin or relation to the deceased as indicated in our banking guidelines and laws.
In that regard, i decided to seek your consent for this prospective opportunity. Have it at the back of your mind, that the transaction does not involve any RISK, and does not need much engagement from you, since i am familiar with this kind of transaction being an
moreResolved Question: If Cap.gain tax treatment is as a trader, can I still get tax exemption out my long term mutual funds gain?
For traders I.T. is payable at normal applicable rates and there is no tax exemption from capital gain out of sale of equity shares for long term. But, will the benefit be available for mutual funds units sale held for long term (one year)?
moreResolved Question: How come Obama is lying about raising taxes?
Obama wants to restore the inheritance tax
Many families lost businesses, farms, ranches, and homes that have been in their families for generations because they could not afford the inheritance tax. Those willing their assets to loved ones will lose them to these taxes.
DIVIDEND TAX - currently 15% McCain will not raise it
Obama will RAISE it to 39.6%
How will this affect you? If you have money invested in stock market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement accounts, or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will be paying nearly 40% of the money earned on taxes if Obama becomes president. The experts predict that 'Higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains would crash the stock market, yet do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.'
CAPITAL GAINS TAX
McCain - NO increases or changes
Obama - INCREASE to 28% on profit from ALL home sales.
How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit, you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community,28% of the money you make from your home sale will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on income from their homes as part of their retirement income.
New government taxes proposed on homes more than 2,400 square feet.
New gasoline taxes (as if gas weren't high enough already)
New taxes on natural resources consumption (heating gas, water, electricity)
New taxes on retirement accounts, and last but not least....
New taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!!
PLUS by allowing the Bush income tax cuts to expire, the taxes will go back to the higher rates under Clinton, doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out, and see through the marxist agenda of Obama.
All of the above info is available to you on Obama's own website by the way

My 401(K) is down 35% year to date after contributing 10% of my annual salary pretax. I''ve kept an eye on where my contributions were going and stayed with the top rated mutual funds available to me in my company plan. Regardless, I'm seeing my YTD personal rate of return getting progressively worse. Am I buying up the funds at a bargain? Or ,would I be better off stopping the contributions to my 401(k) until things stabilize? I could put that money into more readily available savings. My job may not be so secure.

moreResolved Question: Is my fidelity Money Market Mutual Fund safe?
This is what it invests in:
Primarily invests in U.S. dollar-denominated money market securities and repurchase agreements for those securities. The fund may also enter into reverse repurchase agreements. The fund also invests more than 25% of its assets in the financial services industry. An investment in this portfolio is not guaranteed or insured by the FDIC or any other government agency. Although this money market fund seeks to preserve the value of your investment at $1 per share, it is possible to lose money by investing in this fund. Yield will vary.
I have my entire 401k in this account and I'm wondering if its safe in today's market. I'd like to put it into a municipal bond fund that is tax free, but its not available in my 401k. Should I roll it over into an IRA and if so what are the pros and cons to rolling over?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for advice on the best way to invest $25,000.00 I recently turned 26. I am not looking to purchase a home until my late 20's as I may need to travel/relocate within the next couple years for work.
I do have a 6 month emergency fund available, and I am able to pay all bills with my current income, so I will not need the $25K for at least a couple years. I don't have much credit card debt, but I do have a Car loan like $270 PM.
I am looking for the highest rate of return, and I am open to taking investment risks. I would like to learn about investing in stocks/mutual funds, but I don't know if I have enough experience/knowledge to start myself, and wouldn't know where to begin with this sum of money.
Any input/suggestions appreciated!

I have an account with Edward Jones and the broker there will not email me anything. This is the same on Mutual Fund recommendations. I am told they call only talk on the phone or in person. Why is this?

In a couple weeks, a CD (cert. of deposit) of mine will mature and it will yield approximately $7000. I need to know, for either short term or long term, what the best option is for growing this sum of money. In less than a year, I will be living in my first apartment and will need quick and easy access to cash to pay for the down payment, monthly rent payments, etc. Should I steer clear from placing this money into a savings account given the inflation rate is currently hovering around 5% and the avg. savings account has an interest rate of only ~3.5%? What about diversifying and investing this money into various stocks, or is this too risky right now given the economy's and market's precarious condition? Are there 1-year bonds available? What about long term options, i.e. mutual funds?
Any help would be highly appreciated. ThanksTo 'not7methos': I'm looking for a serious answer to my question. I realize you think it's funny to give an inane and thoughtless answer to my question, but honestly, it shows that you're just completely wasting your time, and, quite frankly, your life. You seriously have nothing better to do than to go onto Yahoo Answers and give silly and fake replies?
