Resolved Question: Question on the political consequences of GPS failure?

In recent days, we've heard - and from official US government sources - that around half the current GPS satellites are on 'single-point failure mode' - in other words, they're down to a point in their life where if one thing goes wrong, the satellite shuts down, and they're old enough where we can expect things to start going wrong more often. Given that 1. GPS now underpins not only the timing mechanisms of the US financial market, but also the US power grid, besides its miliary and civil logistics role. 2. WAAS is only an augmentation system, not a replacement signal source. 3. The Russian GLONASS system now has...what is it...24 active satellites? And aims for full global operating capacity by the end of this year, while the European Galileo system has two in-orbit validation satellites up, one of which is now past its expected lifespan. 4. Chipset manufacturers are rumoured to be starting to fit GPS/GLONASS receivers, rather than, as was expected, GPS/Galileo ones, due to the European delays, and 5. The US doesn't have the budget to replace any GPS satellites that fall out of commission ahead of the introduction of GPSIII in around 2015 Given all this, are we heading to a situation where critical US infrastructure (and any technologically-dependent fighting force, say in Afghanistan) is forced for its short-term stability to rely on a proprietory Russian satellite network? Or are we looking at another project that will need to be added to the Federal budget with some urgency? And what would the political fallout be for a Democratic President forced to make this choice? more

Resolved Question: Is driving on the right the biggest global mistake in road usage logistics?

Driving on the left is correct for right-handed people the great majority, here is why: When changing gear in a UK car with the steering wheel on the right , this is of course correct in the UK etc for driving on the left--------your left hand changes gear and your right hand stays on the steering wheel, (this is safer for right handed people.) The reverse is the case in countries where one must drive on the right.-- in other words if you live in the USA you hold the steering wheel with your left hand and change gear with your right hand because of course the steering wheel is on the left in the USA--------this is dangerous if you are right handed.Bicycles: Bike riders are in real danger in countries where driving on the right is mandatory again assuming you are right handed----Try mounting a bike in the USA and you will find yourself in the stream of traffic when getting on the bike---- try it yourself---------: Mounting a bike in the UK is done from the sidewalk by right handed people who find it easier to put their right leg over the bike. , Much safer and this must have saved many lives. Reversing up a steep drive: My drive in the UK is very steep----------when I reverse out I hold the steering wheel with my right hand and look over my left shoulder to the rear window. In a USA car you must hold the steering wheel with your left hand and look over your right shoulder to look out of the rear window.. So you must reverse with your left hand on the steering wheel.. Or stick your head out of the window if you want to use your right hand on the steering wheel. ---Dangerous for the 82% right handed majority.Right handed people who are also "right eyed" have the traffic coming toward them on their right in left hand driving areas , which is the way "right eyed" people are able to react better. Thanks AJ and jeighty4, great replies. Right hand driving is wrong for most people but governments cannot be blamed for not telling everybody about this gigantic mistake. There are several points but the steering wheel one is the most important. Most people in the USA etc have closed their minds to thisTexas but you change gear with your right hand, this makes no sense because it leaves your left hand on the steering wheel.and you look at oncoming traffic with the wrong eye. Try aiming a rifle with the other eye and see the difference. You all have had to overcome massive difficulties to drive on the right and it still leaves a lot of dangerSpud, I can drive on the right as well and I do on holiday; however I do spend a lot of time in the USA steering with my left hand and you will as well, remember this when drivingAJ Yes I have read the history of Napoleon Bonaparte's move to make people drive on the right just because HE was left handedTexas, there is nothing to prevent you holding the steering wheel with your left in a UK car, then you could give your one fingered salute with your RIGHT hand in comical fashon. You may swerve doing this but what's new?Spud, a good comment, you have been through a period of adjustment , I am lucky I am a bit ambidextrous and I can drive easily on the right or left. But I feel odd holding the steering wheel at speed with only my left hand when operating radio controls air con, etc in the USA more
