Ezekiel Emanuel sees the Hippocratic Oath as one factor driving "overuse" of medical care. He is a policy adviser in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Dr. Emanuel argues that "peer recognition goes to the most thorough and aggressive physicians." He has lamented that doctors regard the "Hippocratic Oath's admonition to 'use my power to help the patient to the best of my ability and judgment' as an imperative to do everything for the patient regardless of the cost or effects on others." Of course, that is what patients hope their doctor will do. But President Barack Obama is pledging to rein in the nation's health care spending. The framework for influencing your doctor's decisions was included in the stimulus package, also known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The legislation sets a goal that every individual's treatments will be recorded by computer, and your doctor will be guided by electronically delivered protocols on "appropriate" and "cost-effective" care. Heading the new system is Dr. David Blumenthal, a Harvard Medical School professor, named national coordinator of health information technology. His writings show he favors limits on how much health care people can get. "Government controls are a proven strategy for controlling health care expenditures," he argued in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in March 2001. Blumenthal conceded there are disadvantages: "Longer waits for elective procedures and reduced availability of new and expensive treatments and devices." Yet he called it "debatable" whether the faster care Americans currently have is worth the higher cost. Now that Blumenthal is in charge, he sees problems ahead. "If electronic health records are to save money," he writes, doctors will have to take "advantage of embedded clinical decision support" (a euphemism for computers instructing doctors what to do). "If requirements are set too high, many physicians and hospitals will rebel — petitioning Congress to change the law or just resigning themselves to . . . accepting penalties," he wrote in NEJM early this month. To reduce spending, as President Obama promises, doctors will have to be pressured to deny care. Rand reported that Canada allows few cardiac procedures for patients age 65 and older. In critiquing the Hippocratic Oath, Dr. Emanuel calls for training medical students "to move toward more socially sustainable, cost-effective care." He says the trend "from 'do everything' to PALLATIVE CARE shows that change in physician norms is possible." Dr. Emanuel also cites medical comforts for pushing up costs: "Hospital rooms in the United States offer more privacy, comfort and auxiliary services than do hospital rooms in most other countries," he noted in the Journal of the American Medical Association last June. .Apparently there is no limit on proverbial Wicked Sons per household.Cosmo do you understand the implications of this in context of agenda supported for over a century by major Obama backers? This is not about making life better for more people. It is about there being fewer people. We must look behind the sales tactics!Betelgeuse maybe so but not with these guys.from one telling article: "When Rahm was 14, his parents adopted a newborn girl after the baby’s mother showed up at the hospital where Dr. Emanuel worked as head of pediatrics, wanting to give the girl away. The sister "has not had the sterling success of her brothers" [article-writer's words]. "Zeke says all three....now have an “episodic” relationship with her, and he wonders about the *genesis* of her life’s troubles: “It’s a good question as to how much is environment, following three such brothers, and how much is *genetic*. "It’s hard to know.” moreOpen Question: How do I remove Google Redirect Virus?

How many people can you name who could stop the world in the tracks like this? How many people does it take to break the internet? Just one. The web suffered a number of slowdowns on Friday as people rushed to verify accounts of Michael Jackson’s death. The biggest showbiz story of the year saw the troubled star take a good slice of the internet with him, as the ripples caused by the news of his death swept around the globe, the BBC News portal reported. Search giant Google confirmed to that when the news first broke it feared it was under attack. Millions of people who Googled the star’s name were greeted with an error page rather than a list of results. It warned users “your query looks similar to automated requests from a virus or spyware application”. “It’s true that between approximately 2.40PM Pacific and 3.15PM Pacific, some Google News users experienced difficulty accessing search results for queries related to Michael Jackson and saw the error page,” said Google spokesman Gabriel Stricker. It was around this time that the singer was officially pronounced dead. Google’s trends page showed that searches for Michael Jackson had reached such a volume that in its so called “hotness” gauge the topic was rated “volcanic”.The BBC news website reported that traffic to the site at 0400 BST was 48% higher than average. Google was not the only company overwhelmed by the public’s clamour for information. The news of Michael Jackson’s death rocked Twitter as fans of the star sought the latest information and posted their reactions. Ethan Zuckerman, of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard, said Jackson was a more popular topic on Twitter than the Iran poll or swine flu ever were. “My twitter search script sees roughly 15% of all Tweets mentioning Jackson,” he said. “Never saw Iran or H1N1 reach over 5%.” On Friday all other mentions were repla-ced on Twitter’s trending topic colu-mn by those of Jackson. NYT NEWS SERVICE As sites fell, users raced to other sites: TechCrunch reported that TMZ, which broke the story, had several outages; users then switched to Perez Hilton’s blog, which also struggled to deal with requests. CNN reported a fivefold rise in traffic and visitors in just over an hour, receiving 20 million page views in the hour the story broke. Queries about the star soon rocketed to the top of its updates and searches. But the amount of traffic meant it suffered one of its wellknown outages. According to initial data from Trendrr, a webservice that tracks activity on social media sites, the number of Twitter posts containing “Michael Jackson” totaled more than 100,000 per hour. moreVoting Question: Please Help! Here's a brief list of my credentials (some are assumed because I'm only going into junior year) GPA without weight: 3.61 GPA with weight: 4.08 Improving trend (without weight): Freshman year-3.42 Sophomore year-3.77 Junior year-3.67 Its not completely improvement, but I got better after freshman year. By the end of senior year, I'll have taken 7 AP classes and 7 Honors classes. I actually do really good in the Honors/AP, what brings me down is getting B's in math. Extra Curricular Activities: Key Club (3 years), Art Club (4 years), Jazz Choir (3 years), Solstice Magazine (4 years), Guitar lessons (3 years), I am a singer and pianist and I've done multiple plays with the Oak Brook Academy of Music and Art, I MAY get on to American Idol and that would be a huge stand out thing. I'm only going to be a junior, but without being too generous, I can estimate the following: An overall GPA of about 3.65 Unweighted and more like 4.2 weighted with an improving trend (there is already an improving trend now, so hopefully I'll get a little better junior year) Freshman (already happened): Honors-English, World History, Biology Regular-Spanish 2, Pre-Engineering, Algebra 1 Sophomore (already happened): AP-European History Honors-English, Earth Science Regular-Spanish 3, Geometry, Driver Ed. Junior (Didn't happen, but these classes are set in stone): AP-Language and Composition, U.S. History Honors-Chemistry, Spanish 4 Regular-Algebra 2-Trigonometry, Elective Senior year (tentative classes): AP-Biology, Literature and Composition, Spanish Language, Microeconomics (1/2 year), U.S. Government (1/2 year) Honors-I might take honors physics despite having AP Biology, but I'll probably just take an elective Regular-Pre-Calculus, (?) elective (?) SAT: High test scores (23 out 25 on high school placement exam, high PSATs) predict about a 2050-2200 ACT: 30-33 Decent extra curricular activities including Jazz Choir (3 years), Solstice Literary Magazine Club (4 years), Art Club (4 years), Key Club (3 years), Guitar lessons (3 years). I don't know how much relevance this has but I can really sing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxHxuzlrRwk I also took summer school for extra credits once, it was Etymology and I took it right before freshman year (bad idea) and got an A. I'm almost done with retaking the summer school class, which is helpful to me before taking the SATs and ACT. I have a little bit of community service so far, like 20 hours. I am going from 7 passengers to (reluctantly) 5. I have driven a minivan for about 12 years and am ready to move on to something else. Don't get me wrong - I love the spaciousness of a van and how well it drives, I'm just tired of vans and the last one has been a lemon. Although I really wanted a hybrid, I haven't found any that make me want to do cartwheels so I'm going to buy one more "regular" and by the time I want to get rid of that, hopefully the hybrids will be in full swing and supply. My daughter just turned 15 and is learning to drive, so safety is obviously a concern. Although she won't be driving this car very much, I do want her to be able to manage it. So, I have narrowed my search down to 3. Please don't suggest any different ones because I have looked at every brand from Hyundai through Jaquar. I have had this search going forever and have finally found peace in these three: Mercedes GLK, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60. I have kind of decided no on the Mercedes - a bit too much chrome and maybe too young for me (I'm 44 with 2 kids). I like the Audi and Volvo for different reasons. Both are 2010 models. The Volvo has great safety features like City Safe, but the Audi is just cool. I don't like the Audi's back seat "hump" in the middle - only the smallest of kids could fit there. Both have decent room in the trunk area. In the Volvo, you only have to have the key on your person, but in the Audi you stick the key in the hole. I figure the Volvo would be around $46000 with what I want on it, and the Audi maybe $51000 (Prestige version). Both are similar in gas mileage, I believe. The Volvo includes service until until 30000 miles. Motor Trend and Car and Driver (July issues) both ranked the Audi better than the Volvo, but they were like 1 and 2 or 1 and 3, so very close. Does anyone have experience with either of these cars and could recommend one over the other? I'm wanting to buy in the next month or so, but could extend that to up to 3 months, I believe. Please help - I don't buy cars very often (every 4-5 years) and now I know why - I hate it!! Thanks so much for any insight you can provide to sway me one way or the other. moreResolved Question: Understanding Your Mental Health Insurance | American Academy of ...?

It a question in my homework. Here is the article you need to read first and the question is below, Privacy eroding, bit by byte Computers, Engineers Find New Ways to Keep Tabs On Us First there were security cameras, sprouting like mushrooms on street corners and buildings. Then came shopper cards, offering discounts in exchange for details about buying habits. In recent years, we've seen the emergence of electronic tags or "cookies" on the Internet, software that monitors e-mail, GPS devices that pinpoint our position on the planet, and a growing number of machines that capture fingerprints and face prints. Now comes the news that federal regulators approved the injection of microchips under the skin, enabling physicians with the right gear to know who someone is without having to ask. And yesterday, the omniscient-seeming search engine Google bested itself by announcing a service to probe for information both online and in your own machine. One company official called it a "photographic memory for your computer." Google says no personal information will be sent back to the company. But if it feels like you can't do anything these days without someone looking over your shoulder, you're not just paranoid. Cheap computers, blazing fast networks and clever engineers are finding more and more ways to keep tabs on where you go and what you buy, generally with your permission. They're even getting better at guessing what you'll do next. "It's this whole new world. It's sort of like all these little details about our lives are being recorded," said Richard M. Smith, an Internet security consultant in Boston. "We love the conveniences. We love the services. But people kind of instinctively know there's a dark side to this. They just hope it won't happen to them." Smaller, Faster and Cheaper To be sure, companies have long gathered personal and shopping information to better market to customers, often with dubious results. Who hasn't received junk mail or telemarketing calls that seem to have no connection with their lives? But those initiatives are fast improving' and accelerating as people live more of their lives tethered to cell phones, the Internet and the rest of the wired world, where trading off personal information is part of the price of admission. Think about a typical day. An advertising service is notified when you check the sports scores on the Web. The EZ-Pass transponder signals when you go through a tollbooth. The pharmacy collects personal medication details and sends them along to data companies for analysis. At work, some employees now use face recognition systems to get in to their offices, or they type on machines that trace every keystroke. "Every move you make is becoming part of your permanent record," said Peter P. Swire, a privacy expert and law professor at Ohio State University. "The trend is smaller, faster, cheaper." Rapid Accumulation There's no question the data are accumulating, and faster than many people understand. A few years ago, researchers at the University of California at Berkeley estimated that all the information created by humanity by 1999 would double by about now. One of the leading aggregators of personal information, an Arkansas company called Acxiom Corp., has roughly a million times more information about adult Americans and their families than when it first sold stock two decades ago. Other commercial information services routinely tout their ability to access some 20 billion records. And that's not counting the digital details that come in the form of photographs, videotapes and sensor readings. Most people know companies can mine credit card data, loan records and other transactions. But few know that companies already offer video-mining services as well. One day we might be able to mine the information generated by radio frequency identification chip implanted in our arms. Or we might just use a Google search service custom-made for RFID, as the chips are known. Not everybody is vexed by these trends. Homeland security, law enforcement and intelligence officials are rushing to take advantage of this wealth of information to protect the country. Web sites like Amazon.com, cell phone services, catalogue retailers, financial services companies and many others are increasingly adept at using data systems to serve customers. Ask people whether they'd give up those services, and many would offer a resounding "no." David Brin, an author and futurist, believes that recent technological developments have revolutionized the ability of people to see, through cameras around the globe, and remember details through almost unimaginably rich warehouses of information that serve as proxies for our limited memories. He predicts that we will one day be able to "know" almost everybody in the world through instant access to personal information in ubiquitous dat moreResolved Question: food issue question..!! So far, in high school, I have about a 3.65 GPA without weight, taking about 3 honors/AP classes each year. This is my overall unweighted GPA. There has really been a big improving trend, which I hear is good, but where the trend starts out is kind of bad. First semester freshmen year I got a 3.3 unweighted, 3.8 weighted, second semester it was 3.5 unweighted, 4.0 weighted, 3rd semester it was 3.7 unweighted, 4.2 weighted, and then the same thing 4th semester. In terms of activities, I was in solstice literary magazine, and art club freshman year, in addition to playing the guitar (and taking lessons), but financials forced my dad to take me out of lessons, I also am a pretty talented singer, and I've been in bands starting in middle school until now. Sophomore year, I was in Solstice, Guitar club, Show choir, and Art club. In terms of community service, I've volunteered a little but not a lot. Look, I have a ton of Jewish friends from all around the world, and greatly respect the culture, food, accomplishments, and rights of Jewish people. No question there. I am not the only one I know who is observing this, it is just really taboo to talk about - but it really seems like something in Jewish culture makes it permissible to treat service staff badly. In New York - without fail - every single time I go out with my friends of Jewish origin they bark at waiters, demean them, and tip low - it often ends up in some kind of neurotic Seinfeldian fight over side dishes. Ok, so 3 days ago my pc decided to freak out and start giving me pop ups for WinPC Antivirus, well, I thought I had that removed but since then it's all gotten worse. I am just today able to use Firefox to get online, but it's like as soon as it knows I am trying to do something to kill it, it knocks me offline. I cannot access IE at all. There are pop ups showing up when I first bootup now that take me to IE, but I can never see WHERE it's going to find out what I am dealing with. Anyhow, with all this...Norton, Windows Defender and AdAware all say there is nothing on my computer now. Knowing that there is I downloaded Spyware Dr and Malwarebytes, it will not allow me to run these two files to even install them. I did however get hijackthis installed and I am hoping that one of you genius' out here can make heads or tails of it and guide me a little from this point. 2nd journalism assigment, honest opinions plz, i know its controvertial but i didnt pick the subject. prt 1 TEENAGE MOTHERS ON A RISE By Aimee Davis In recent years, the number of teenage mothers has hit a record high not just in Australia but all over the world. Studies have shown that the United States and New Zealand have the largest number of teen pregnancies and births in the world, while Japan and South Korea have the lowest. It is estimated that annually 13.1 million women under the age of 20 give birth, with more than 90% of these births occurring in developing countries. In Australia, The birth rates to teen mothers alone are around 19 live births for every 1, 000th teenager, coming in 6th among OECD countries for teenage pregnancy. A recent report published in the Medical Journal of Australia highlights a frightening compilation of statistics on the nation's teenagers and the results of their risky sexual behavior. Dr Henrietta Williams, the senior medical officer with Family Planning Victoria says that “We do a lot better than countries such as the States with regards to the numbers of unplanned pregnancies and the numbers of sexually transmitted infections in young people, But we don't do nearly as well as countries such as Holland, who have managed to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies amongst teenagers dramatically in the last ten to fifteen years”. The reason for such trends, especially with the current global financial crisis is that having a baby young provides the mother with the stability required to go back to school, quit drugs and alcohol and get a job, with some Queensland schools even devising special programs for young mothers to complete their education. Professor Julie Quinlivan says that studies have shown that disadvantaged teens that fell pregnant often had better life outcomes then those who did not. She said that these girls also help save the economy money, as pregnancy helped them engaged in more services which helped them develop a more focused plan for the future. It may be controversial but from a societal or evolutionary point of view, these young women might just be doing the right thing for themselves Prof. Quinlivan says. It is an extremely common misconception that all teen mothers are likely to become bad mothers; however this is not the case; more often than not it is the socio-economic status of the parents that determine this. Professor Quinlivan says that it isn’t the age of the mother that matters, but rather the adverse social area that she originates from. “People look down on me for having a baby so young. They think that I can’t do as good of a job as someone twice my age, that I can’t afford to keep my child or that I won’t be able to take care of her. It’s hard to explain how I feel about the way these people judge me” says Amy Boneham, 19. She fell pregnant with her daughter Sienna when she was just 16. She says that having her daughter has changed her life and given her something more than parties and alcohol to think about. She runs a successful business from home to help pay the living expenses involved with having a child. “All up, I only spend about $140 dollars a week on Si Including The fee’s for kindy so it isn’t too hard on my budget” In recent times, it has become commonplace for young mothers and their partners to live at one of the couples parents’ houses while trying to find their feet, with it being widely accepted that the father will work to support the mother and child while she takes care of the baby. Christy Bennett, 16 says that while she doesn’t find it stressful juggling a baby with bills and living expenses she still likes to stay informed of the current economic situation. “My partner works, and we live with my parents for now so I have all the financial and emotional support I can get. My mother is great, she helps me out alot” Although her and her boyfriend Gene didn’t plan the birth plan the birth of their daughter, Sophia they say they couldn’t be happier. “Before Sophia my life was boring and I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, but now I have direction” Christie says. “I would love to get into reception when Sophia gets older”. The Australian government recently introduced a family income test, to determine the eligibility of the mothers in accordance with their taxable income within the first 6 months of birth for families with children born on the 1st of January onwards, with it only being available to families that have earnt under $75, 000 in this period. If the family is found eligible and the mother and/or father are under 18, then baby bonus is then payed in 13 installments, over 6 months. With the Governments new baby bonus scheme for parents under 18 it has become increasingly easy to provide for the child and to make sure that they always have appropriate food, clothes and living quarters.Danielle Graham, 17 says that the installments of $380 a fortnight instead of the previous lump sum payment takes a lot of stress off her and her partner Aaron as the payments last longer and get used more efficiently. Danielle says that these installments combined with Centrelinks parenting payments are enough to support her family for now, as her partner is currently looking for work. Although their family was semi-planned they did not expect to fall pregnant as soon as they did. “It’s really hard to take care of my son, especially with Aaron having no job. I don’t particularly pay attention to the economy but I’m certainly feeling it. Luckily we have just been approved for a Government funded house, so it will be good to have that security. my second journalism assigment, what do you think? TEENAGE MOTHERS ON A RISE In recent years, the number of teenage mothers has hit a record high not just in Australia but all over the world. With the Governments new baby bonus scheme for parents under 18 it has become increasingly easy to provide for the child and to make sure that they always have appropriate food, clothes and living quarters. Danielle Graham, 17 says that the installments of $380 a fortnight instead of the previous lump sum payment takes a lot17 says that the installments of $380 a fortnight instead of the previous lump sum payment takes a lot of stress off her and her partner Aaron as the payments last longer and get used more efficiently. I don’t know how we would cope without out parenting payments and the baby bonus”. Questions: 2. Evaluate the asset, debt, and equity structure of Lucent Technologies, as well as trends and changes found on the common-size balance sheet. 3. What concerns would investors and creditors have based on only this information? 4. What additional financial and nonfinancial information would investors and creditors need to make investing and lending decisions for Lucent Technologies? Reading: Executive Summary We design and deliver the systems, software and services that drive next-generation communications networks. Backed by Bell Labs research and development, we use our strengths in mobility, optical, access, data and voice networking technologies, as well as services, to create new revenue-generating opportunities for our customers, while enabling them to quickly deploy and better manage their networks. Our customer base includes communications service providers, governments and enterprises worldwide. We have three segments organized around the products and services we sell. The reportable segments are Integrated Network Solutions (“INS”), Mobility Solutions (“Mobility”) and Lucent Worldwide Services (“Services”). INS provides a broad range of software and wireline equipment related to voice networking (primarily consisting of switching products, which we sometimes refer to as convergence solutions, and voice messaging products), data and network management (primarily consisting of access and related data networking equipment and operating support software) and optical networking. Mobility provides software and wireless equipment to support radio access and core networks. Services provides deployment, maintenance, professional and managed services in support of both our product offerings as well as multi-vendor networks. Beginning in fiscal 2001, the global telecommunications market deteriorated, resulting from a decrease in the competitive local exchange carrier market and a significant reduction in capital spending by established service providers. This trend intensified during fiscal 2002 and continued into fiscal 2003. Reasons for the market deterioration included general economic slowdown, network overcapacity, customer bankruptcies, network build-out delays and limited availability of capital. We believe that the market for telecommunications equipment has stabilized and is starting to grow in certain areas. The growing demands of enterprises and consumers for additional services tailored to their needs is creating the need for a new convergence of networks, technologies and applications. Climate researcher Anthony Watts reports: Global warming is one of the most serious issues of our times. Some experts claim the rise in temperature during the past century was “unprecedented” and proof that immediate action to reduce human greenhouse gas emissions must begin. Other experts say the warming was very modest and the case for action has yet to be made. The reliability of data used to document temperature trends is of great importance in this debate. We can’t know for sure if global warming is a problem if we can’t trust the data. The official record of temperatures in the continental United States comes from a network of 1,221 climate-monitoring stations overseen by the National Weather Service, a department of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Until now, no one had ever conducted a comprehensive review of the quality of the measurement environment of those stations. During the past few years I recruited a team of more than 650 volunteers to visually inspect and photographically document more than 860 of these temperature stations. We were shocked by what we found. We found stations located next to the exhaust fans of air conditioning units, surrounded by asphalt parking lots and roads, on blistering-hot rooftops, and near sidewalks and buildings that absorb and radiate heat. We found 68 stations located at wastewater treatment plants, where the process of waste digestion causes temperatures to be higher than in surrounding areas. In fact, we found that 89 percent of the stations – nearly 9 of every 10 – fail to meet the National Weather Service’s own siting requirements that stations must be 30 meters (about 100 feet) or more away from an artificial heating or radiating/reflecting heat source. In other words, 9 of every 10 stations are likely reporting higher or rising temperatures because they are badly sited. It gets worse. We observed that changes in the technology of temperature stations over time also has caused them to report a false warming trend. We found major gaps in the data record that were filled in with data from nearby sites, a practice that propagates and compounds errors. We found that adjustments to the data by both NOAA and another government agency, NASA, cause recent temperatures to look even higher. The conclusion is inescapable: The U.S. temperature record is unreliable. * * * http://climatesci.org/2009/05/04/is-the-us-surface-temperature-record-reliable-by-anthony-watts/ * * * How can we say if there is global warming or cooling if the accuracy of data is not there? moreVoting Question: Why does Battlefield 1942 Stop Responding on my computer?
