A worn red, white and blue sign taped to the front door of ResourceMFG warns potential hires that the recruiter uses a federal program to root out illegal immigrants. Branch manager Tamara Mantooth put the sign up about two months ago when she noticed that nearly half the company's applicants presented questionable IDs. “It was interesting,” she said. “After we put the sign up, some people would come up to the door, look at the sign and then turn away.” Her company is one of a growing number in North Carolina and across the country enrolling in E-Verify, a once-obscure program run by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration. Critics say it's a flawed and expensive program that doesn't deter illegal immigration. But as the Obama administration warns that it will focus on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants, N.C. firms are choosing the free and voluntary program in record numbers. In the past two years, the number of enrolled N.C. companies has increased by more than 700percent to 2,567. Local participants include Bank of America, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and the Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge. Last year, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, made more than 6,000 workplace arrests; 135 were employers and managers. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a Senate hearing last week that ICE can do better. “Active enforcement of our immigration laws must address not just the illegal workers themselves,” she said, “but also the employers who hire illegal labor and fuel the phenomenon of illegal immigration into the United States.” Worried about raids Gilberto Bergman, president of Bergman Brothers Staffing of Charlotte, says companies can no longer claim they didn't know they hired workers using fake IDs. He said companies are using E-Verify to protect themselves in the event of raids or investigations. Bergman cited an October raid of an N.C.-based House of Raeford Farms plant in Greenville, S.C. More than 300 workers were detained. The plant manager, the human resource manager and about a dozen supervisors were arrested on immigration charges.“When you actually hear that they're going to go ahead and prosecute, take to court the people who actually did the hiring, that's a big concern for HR people,” he said. “Employers are paying a lot more attention to who they are hiring, especially here in the Carolinas,” A 2006 Observer investigation found illegal immigrants working for major N.C. road-building companies using Social Security numbers that were fake, stolen or belonging to dead people. Using payroll records from contractors, including Rea Contracting of Charlotte, the newspaper found questionable Social Security numbers for a third of 85 workers. Rea is now using E-Verify, according to ICE. Advocates, critics E-Verify was first tested in 1997 so employers could compare employment forms to Social Security and immigration records. Participation nationally has been expanding at a rate of about 1,000 new employers a week, Napolitano said. More than 122,000 employers are enrolled, nearly five times more than in 2007. Last year, President Bush signed an order requiring companies that do business with the federal government to use E-Verify. South Carolina, Arizona and Mississippi require all employers to use E-Verify, according to the National Immigration Law Center. North Carolina passed a law in 2006 requiring that all state employees, including those at universities, be vetted by E-Verify. Opponents claim the program does not effectively reduce illegal immigrants. The Immigration Policy Center, a pro-immigrant research group, says E-Verify ensnares American job seekers in database errors, adds to employers' costs and “does not actually prevent undocumented immigrants from getting jobs.” The Congressional Budget Office estimated that expanding the federal verification program could cost $17billion over the next 10 years. Soon after I got married I began getting abused. It started with emotional abuse. I was put down so much that I didn’t even feel human. My identity as a woman was stolen from me by my now x-husband. He cheated on me at every drop of a hat, and because of that I got an STD, which gave me precancerous cells. Okay i have worked at two banks in the last 2 years and i was terminated from both of them. reason being for attendance. While i dont think either termination was fair or just, it is what it is. I will admit i was often late to work at both jobs but compared to other employees my attendance was just the same i was not the only one late all the time but whatever. Okay i have been in banking for the last 2 and1/2 years i worked at two different banks. I was terminated from both of them. Reason being for attendance. In both situations we had just got new managers and there was a bit of discrimination involved i think. I know I should be grateful to have a job. So before I start whining, I am grateful to have a job. I just really hate it. Our plant manager is inhuman. I have so much stress it is affecting my physical and mental health. Constant headaches, vomiting blood (doc said from stress) and others. I have asked advice on what to do with this man before but I have gotten no where and things continue to get worse. example- Our company is struggling financially. We are paid every 2 weeks. But for the past few months we have noticed our hours have been changed on our checks. You can see the punch in times and so. I know what time i punch in but it will have me for hours later. Or leaving 3 or 4 hours early. When I didn't. Others have had 10 or 15 hours missing from their pay. My last check along with 2 others were 3 days late. We were told the deposit was made late. I found out the manager was told to not give our checks until after 5:30 because the money wasn't in the bank yet. Mine is direct deposit so that meant I wouldn't paid till Monday. This has happened about every pay day. The manger is verbally abusive towards most of us. He has his "pets". Most of us are sent home early for one reason or another at times. I haven't had a full check in months. I support a family of 4 with this job. But the "pets" get their 40 hours each week and overtime. I hate this job. I pull over at the store near my work and cry at the thoughts of going in every morning. I have no interest in anything I use to do. I don't want to talk to friends or family. I know I may have some depression but can't afford to go to a doctor at this time. So please don't suggest that. This man makes my life and my coworkers a living hell. Okay, this lady from bank of america called me about my app a few weeks back maybe a month and she told me if i was selected for a phone interview, she would be in contact with me. Okay, now its been nearly a month i never got an email saying i was not selected i even checked my spam and i have not heard from her...i have tried to contact her but im never successful. Good Evening, I was the sales/branch manager for a local bank in Athens, Georgia. I was employed with them over a year but have been in the banking field for over five years. When I took this position the branch was very much in the red. I had a loan goal my first year of 350K. I exceeded that goal and made 890K worth of loans, as well as exceeded every other goal I was given. This year I was told I would need to make 2 million in loan goals to pay the bank back for my 36K a year salary, which I was working toward. I was discharged from the bank in Mar 09 for doing a loan for a family member the beginning of Jan 09. The reason they gave for my discharged was due to violating policy. I was never told in this locally family owned bank that I was unable to do loans for family member, and as the officer over the accounts for this family member no one had ever said I could not be an officer of anything concerning a family member or process family loans. I do fill I followed procedure because I did pick up the phone and call 3 other loan officers to see if they could handle the loan request because it was indeed a family member. I left a message for all 3 officers to contact me, I never heard back till the next morning. Since I did not hear back from them and did not realize I was going against policy I underwrote the loan like I would anyone. Since they qualified for the loan I approved it and allowed my ops manager to write and sign the proceeds check. The loan was for a surgical procedure that was going to take place the next morning. The loan amount was $3500 and I got confirmation from the insurance company before doing the loan that they would pay this claim with the next 120 days. I even gave the insurance company the address, loan number and payoff amount for the loan to send in to pay off the loan in full. The next morning I received a call from one of the officers. I let this person know I had done the loan and what the underwriting looked like for the loan. The officer asks was it within my loan limits, which it was, and he stated the loan should be fine. I sent the loan to loan operations and did not think anymore about it because I did not realize I was doing anything wrong. The next thing I know I got a call from my manager regarding the loan in Mar 09. My manager asks was the loan made for a family member, and I replied yes. Because myself, the officer I had spoke with regarding my family members loan and my manager where suppose to talk the next morning regarding another loan, my manager just said we would talk about it the next morning. When I come in the next morning my manager took my into human resources and himself and the human resource manager informed me that I had violated a major policy and that I was terminated. I told them I was unaware of the policy and the steps above that I had followed, which is what I was told to do by my manager in case I had any questions regarding any type loan request. After I let them both know what I had done my manager said I just was not a good fit for the bank. Not once had I never been reprimanded for anything neither verbally or written. The branch that I was the manager for is also an in store location. There are 3 total branch locations that are located in a local store, out of those 3 branches 2 of the branches are being shut down by the end of this year only leaving the branch I was managing to remain opened. They are also not hiring another sales/branch manager for this location and there is now a firing freeze going on throughout the bank. This in my option is why I was terminated, and this gave the bank a way to let me go without having to pay and unemployment claim. I went to the unemployment officer and request an unemployment insurance claim be made available to me. I received a letter in the mail stating I would receive benefits unless an appeal was filed. I received a call last Friday from an unemployment claims specialist. I got a call back today and she asks me several questions. I seen it was not going well so I went up to the unemployment office and ask what I would need to do regarding an applies process. When they pulled my claim they said I had been denied my unemployment benefits since the 20th of Mar and I had not spoken with anyone until today Mar 24th. I went ahead and submitted my request for an appeal review due to me being unaware of my policy violation as well as in my sales training manual does not say anything against or for doing family loans; I still have the manual showing to that effect. The other day at work, the bank president's assistant phone line rang and since the assistant was on the line it rang out to my line. The lady that called was the Group Employee Relations Manager (the lady who is the head of unemployment and human resources in the company) called and asked to speak to my manager. I went to get my manager and I told him who was on the line. The manager then went to talk to her on his phone line. Before my manager could pick her up, the president's assistant picked the call up off of my managers line and said something to her and hung up. My manager asked where the call was at and she said that she couldn't talk to him right now after she had already waiting a minute or two at this point. 15 minutes later she calls back and the president's assistant quietly informs my manager that she is on the line. He shuts his office door and talks for about 15 minutes or so. He comes out of his office with a gray file in his hand and I am sure he took it to her hr managers office. Okay, here's the deal. My mother used to work in Duane Reade and is currently working in Rite Aid. She has at least six years of being a cashier which should be fine enough for her to become a bank teller. I took some of those online assessment tests and maybe I didn't past any of them and when I apply for jobs that didn't require tests, they still haven't called. For the past year my manager at work has been giving me lectures about my performance, attitude etc. when our old manager left I was left to clean up all the old files, clear out the returns from the back room and basically fix everything up that had been left askew with the prospect that I would get the manager job. I was left to place orders, pay bills and fix accounts that where going under due to the last manager, all without formal training. The store did great and sales actually increased. However I started noticing small things, such as orders in the trash before being received and tags missing or scrambled which meses you up when dealing with a large inventory. Products were moved together on the shelves to make the store look more empty, etc. Then I found out he had called the owner to tell him his store was going under, and offered to take the management job. He was made manager and ever since them my job "performance" has been going down. If I don't say the right thing to a customer or have a conversation he doesn't like I'm instantly being lectured to about my "attitude". None of my customers have complained and Ive actually got quite a few that say they come to the store just to see me. However my manager states that there have been numerous complaints made about the way I treat customers, thought his descriptions are always very vague and non specific about what exactly I said or did. He's also got friends that hang around in the store that ask me questions about whether or not I would date my manager if he wasn't married. And one friend/customer of his that stands at the counter asking me to marry him and that he loves me. Oh - and that he wants to cut off my head. When I appear uncomfortable with this he starts yelling saying that I don't trust him etc. I told my manager twice that this makes me uncomfortable, but he seems to take it as a joke and laughs at me. Ive been with this company for 4 years and was just suspended by my manager for "lack of enthusiasm" ??? he told me I was pretty much going to be fired and should look for another job, he also took my personal keys to the store and bank deposit. then he calls me a few hours later saying that the owner was freaked out thinking that I had the impression I was let go (Duh!) , and that he was going to pay me for the week I was let go, with a talk about my job after that time. What the heck is going on? And even the other manager was watching him do this quietly, like she was insulted. The human resources guy offered me a job, he started giving me different hours from what I was told before, and I asked him if this was for the bank (State farm), and he said that it was to sell insurances (I guess an agent), he apologized and asked if i was interested, I said I don't have any selling experience (just being honest, besides I hate selling). After two and a half weeks of classroom training at a certain bank call center, On-The-Job training was to continue for another 3 weeks until a situation arose in the second week of OTJ. A call was taken from another bank associate at a different department who was tending to an inquiry from a disrespectful customer. After answering the other associate's question, he asked me to remain on the line to justify his answer to the customer. The rude customer was constantly raising his voice and disagreeing with the other associate to the point where the associate reminded him that calls may be monitored and that he reserves the right to release the call if the customer did not continue the conversation more respectably. The customer continued disrespectfully and the other associate released the call. I was still on the line, however. Having identified myself and clarifying that what the previous associate said regarding his inquiry was correct (which is what he did not want to hear), he redirected his temper toward me. After trying to explain to him while he constantly tried talking over me, I did reiterate that respect needed to be maintained. The conversation continued and he asked me for my full name. After giving it to him, he made a patronizing comment in response to hearing my last name. He then made berating comments toward myself and my abilities to which I warned him the call would be release should it not continue in a respectable manner (even making reference to the prior associate releasing the call). After another contradiction, I stated that after three warnings I would be dropping the call. He continued and I announced I will release the call and proceeded to do so. The next day, my manager informs me a case was opened up in regards to this call and that I was never to release a call unless foul language was used (though I was informed during classroom training that calls can be released if I was being badmouthed). I mentioned that I was berated and verbally abused, but because no specific foul language was used, I should have continued the call. I also mentioned that I was still in training and was taking a cue from the other associate on the line. But she told me that I should have made my own judgment. The next day, the call from human resources came in and I was forced to resign or be terminated. During training, I was above average in performance reviews and was even told by my manager that she was trying to change this into a written warning. But because I brought up the situation and my actions in response to it during a end of the day training debrief, I was told that termination or resignation were the only options. I stand by my actions and feel that this bank has wronged me by forcing me to resign. I want to bring this up to the company, but do not know how to go about doing so. I'm 19 and temporarily living with my parents. I was working at a daycare but my boss was harrassing and verbally abusing me and threatened to fire me for little mistakes like wiping down the changing table with disinfectant then alcohol instead of vice versa, or wearing the wrong color shoes. She would tell me, "you're so replaceable. watch your back." Well this one week she took me out of my classroom and made me scrub all the daycares toilets, clean all the windows, and sweep the sidewalks and then come out and say, "not good enough. do it over." and laugh at me. then a bunch of co-workers came to me and told me she told everyone she was going to fire me on monday after i finished cleaning the whole place. we had no human resources department, i didnt know what to do. all i knew is i was losing it emotionally and i no longer felt i could properly care for the kids. well i heard her talking about firing me in the hallway so i snapped and gave her my two weeks notice. it was so horrible i had strep throat and she said if i didnt show up she'd fire me, but i couldnt get to the doctor because i was working during office hours, so i was horribly sick and still working. then i got food poisoning and still had to go to work and constantly ran to the bathroom throwing up. i know i should have had another job in place, but i was going to have a mental breakdown. now i cant find a job anywhere. ive put in over 40 applications and nothing. ive called an called and nothing. i reported my boss, but had no proof. all the other co-workers wouldnt vouch for me out of fear of losing their jobs. i fear that because i have to write down all of my work experience they will call my boss and she will say bad things about me. i think thats what shes been doing because i went to a daycare who said they had an opening, but after calling after turning in my app she told me, "oh, did i say that? no. we're actually not hiring." i have 85 cents in my bank account and a bills overdue. I quit so I can't get unemployment (I only worked there 4 months anyways). I need a job so badly but I have no clue what to do. I would appreciate some feedback as I am going crazy. I don't know what to do, law experts, restauraunt employees , human resource workers etc, please help! I just started a new job as a hostess at a restaurant. it dosnt get crazy busy but it does fri and sat and usually at nights. Everything was fine till i noticed some pet peeves that later grew into huge things to me and have me going emotional right now. Here they are . 1) Whenever i am off , say 330 I let the managers know i am off that time at about 3:15 (i remind them) because it takes 15 min to count my bank and have them count it (i do to-go orders). If i count it at 3:15 i will be off at 330. Several times now I have reminded them and they basically just ignore me until i literally tell them i AM OFF NOW. Like right now (3:30) then we go count it and i don't get to leave till about nearly 4pm. Yes i am getting paid but that is not the pt, the pt is that I was suposed to be off a certain time... why do i need to stay laterwhy should i have to stay later. After a few instances i talked to the manager he told me that i should expect to stay about 15 min later and that scheduled shifts dont necessarily mean you get off that exact time. I disagree i feel as amanager , you should be proactive and know when your employees are getting off. 2) We get 10 min breaks for every 3 hours of work. I have worked there almost 3 weeks and have only gotten 1 ACTUAL break where i get to sit down. I have gotten a few where i am standing on a break while helping guests, the other times i dont get a break. Wheni ask for a break a few times i get the 'but why its busy' i offer to eat while watching the front door..WHY CANT i sit and eat on my break without feeling guilty. yes i know its busy, its a restaurant but i dont know about this. 3) I am on a day off they call me to work 6-9. Closer calls in sick , assumes i can stay later..fine... i am susposed to be off at 10pm now.. OK fine... 10 comes around so i tell the managi tell the manager i am off and he says no ur susposed to stay till 11, i think he is kidding and joke with him like are you serious? he says yes the rest closes at 11 ur susposed to be here till 11. ... i am shocked. I tell him its my day off i was susposed to be off at 9pm he says he will get me off in 10 min , whilist he is eating dinner with his wife at a table laughing andjoking with her. 45 min rolls around, i am finally able to go. Yes some people might say i need to take initiative and say i really got to go home, or that i need to take my break. But my pt is this..why do i need to feel guilty that i can take my break? that i should sit on my 10 min break instad of stand as i am standing for hours already. When i am off, why cant they be accomodating and tell me ok instead of 'whyyy, its busy' or ignore me till they are free. Yes i know it gets busy but i am on wits ends, and i do NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. Talking to The GM dosnt seem to work... can they get in trouble ??! more
